GSF schools back in session
It’s difficult to know at the moment where things stand with schools in Haiti - after 5 months of a COVID pause, despite very few cases in Haiti, and only one on Île à Vache (according to official figures, anyway). The government decided that schools should go back in mid-August and finish the previous school year by the first week in October. Then, the 9th grade will have their national exams for high-school entry, and the other classes all start back immediately for the next school year!
GSF’s schools are in the middle of all that. We have a month to go to finish the previous school year, and then the new school year begins on 12 October. We have our new computer lab up and running after a year of storing laptops in a closet, we have divided two classrooms to allow all students to be schooled in one session, and all to have lunches. A new outdoor roofed pavilion is under construction for the Kindergarten near the first pavilion.
Our agriculture program deserves a special blog post (coming soon!) but they are going full tilt, feeding the school and keeping 10 people employed with 5 fields, three chicken houses and a new well. We have a new assistant agronomist, Esther, our first woman agronomist!
So in hope of a smoother year than this last! Wish us luck, and please think of the 252 students on Île à Vache, and the 210 at IMECT if you are able to help! We are underfunded, especially for IMECT and for textbook purchases. Your support makes our activities possible.
