Rotary; Haiti School Fund Raiser “Pirate-Themed Concert” 8th May 2010. The Rotary Club of Tortola has launched a campaign to raise $100,000 to build a new school on Ile A Vache, Haiti. The fundraising effort will continue on Saturday, May 8th, with a beach party and concert by celebrated BVI entertainer Michael “Beans” Gardner. Dubbed “Pirates with a Porpoise”, the event will take place at Myett’s on Cane Garden Bay and will feature a sandcastle building contest, crab races, an art auction and Gardner’s signature pirate-themed variety show. The school-building project will extend educational opportunities to some of Haiti’s most impoverished children. It is a partnership between the Rotary Club of Tortola, the Rotary Club of Les Cayes (Haiti) and the Good Samaritan Foundation, which operates the school. The Club has already raised around $60,000.00 during 2009 and hopes to meet its target during 2010. The funds raised will go towards building and outfitting a school for more than 200 students on Ile a Vache, an island off the southern coast of Haiti. In addition to raising funds in the BVI, the Rotary Club of Tortola will be seeking assistance from the world-wide network of Rotary, including those Rotarians who have visited the club in past few years “Pirates with a Porpoise” takes place at Myett’s at Cane Garden Bay beginning at 3.30 p.m. on Saturday, May 8. Admission is free, but donations to the Haiti School Fund will be accepted. Myett’s has generously offered to donate a portion of the afternoon’s proceeds to the Haiti School Project. Gardner will hold a series of similar events in the U.S. Virgin Islands to raise funds for the school project. The first of these will take place at Mahoe Bay, St. John later in May.
